Overview

Named after an ancient warlike tribe, the Cateran Trail is a 60 mile / 96km circular route into the Perthshire mountains from Blairgowrie. From Blairgowrie the route goes north to Bridge of Cally from where a circuit can be walked in either direction through the three glens - Isla, Shee and Ardle, passing Kirkmichael, Spittal of Glenshee, and Alyth.

Blairgowrie

The Cateran Trail starts at the town of Blairgowrie, in Perthshire. Situated on the banks of the River Ericht, Blairgowrie is popular with golfers and anglers, and is the centre of the Perthshire soft fruit growing industry. The nearby village of Meikleour is home to the world's tallest hedge, which was planted in 1746.

Balmoral Castle

Kirkmichael

Next, you reach the small village of Kirkmichael. The village has a vast history, and settlements have existed here from around 200BC. It also housed Oliver Cromwell's troops in 1653, and a battle took place in the churchyard. Kirkmichael also, surprisingly, hosts the annual Kirkmichael International Guitar Festival, playing host to music lovers from all over the world.
