Essex
The Beth Chatto Gardens, Elmstead Market, Colchester, Essex
Your gardens tour begins in Essex, in the south of the region. Created from a neglected hollow, this is a triumph of planting in every condition, from the large gravel garden filled with drought resistant plants to stunning sunny borders, bog gardens and dry woodland shade. Inspirational plantings throughout show how to use leaf and flower to best advantage. There are a number of unusual plants and a superb nursery selling many of the varieties grown.
Audley End, Saffron Walden, Essex
Essex is also home to Audley End. Audley End is a richly decorated Jacobean house set in a 'Capability' Brown park featuring a Robert Adam bridge and temple, cascade and fine trees. Recently restored 19th century parterre garden planted with varieties of that period, pond garden with scented old roses, a rock garden and walled organic kitchen garden. Here visitors can purchase their own organic produce.
