Wimbledon
Wimbledon (www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/about/guide/club.html) is the most famous tennis tournament in the world, and has been going since 1877. Since then, the Championships have developed from a garden party atmosphere to a highly professional tournament featuring players from over 60 countries, watched by millions of people all over the world.
Every year, around 500,000 tennis fans flock to Wimbledon to see the best players in the world battle it out for the title of Wimbledon Champion. The Championships start towards the end of June and last approximately 2 weeks, or until all events are complete. The 2008 championships run from 23 June - 6 July.
Wimbledon has produced some tennis legends including John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Stefi Graff, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova and Venus and Serena Williams. The current Men's Champion is Roger Federer, and Ladies' Champion is Venus Williams. London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympics also means that Wimbledon will host the Olympic tennis games for the first time in over 100 years (the last time was in 1908).
