Spotlight on Spitalfields
The site of a busy market since 1638, when King Charles gave a licence for ‘flesh, fowl and roots’ to be sold in what was then known as Spittle Fields, this whole area of London has recently undergone massive rejuvenation. Modern design successfully merges with Victorian architecture to create a whole new exciting, lively, thriving shopping experience, selling somewhat more interesting wares than in King Charles’s day!
Superb shopping
A diverse network of traditional traders and cutting-edge, creative stallholders and burgeoning fashion boutiques make up the sparkling new Spitalfields (www.visitspitalfields.com). On a day’s visit you can pick up anything from fair trade cushions and rare vinyl to lovingly crafted notebooks and hand-carved toy trains. There are jewel encrusted vintage boots for individualist tastes, reconditioned art deco sofas for elegant sensibilities and food shops and restaurants to satisfy every hungry belly.
Funky fashion
Where do you start in this area which is quietly heading back to some of its roots dating back to the silk weavers in the 18th century? Today, the words sexy, smart, funky and individual come to mind. There are shirt makers, footwear designers, bespoke suits and boutiques. Dive in and feel the energy!
