Under the rule of the Stewart dynasty Scotland flourished into a rich, modern nation. Stewart monarchs such as King James IV and VI were advocates of the Renaissance movement so the arts and sciences also thrived. Further reforms instigated the replacement of Mary Queen of Scots by her son King James VI.

The first king of Britain

James IV married Princess Margaret Tudor, daughter of King Henry VII of England. The 'Marriage of the Thistle and the Rose' was held at Stirling Castle (www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/properties_sites_detail.htm?propertyID=PL_275) in 1503 and led the way for James to succeed the English throne when Elizabeth I (the Virgin Queen) died leaving no heir, making James the first King of Britain.
