South West England: Riverford Farm
Riverford Farm is all about passion - passion for food and for inspiring customers to share that passion. John Watson began farming at Riverford on the southern edge of Dartmoor in 1951 with his wife Gillian. Their passion for good food led to a total family commitment to getting produce from farm to kitchen table by the most direct route. The farm converted to organic status in 1987 when John's brother began growing three acres of organic vegetables in the field behind his brother's farm shop. Since then more than 800 acres of the farm have been certified by the Soil Association and Riverford is now one of the country's largest independent growers. It now includes the farm, the dairy, an organic vegetable business and three farm shops with butchery, bakery and kitchens. Each sells a wide range of organic and local produce with traditional butchers' counters selling local meat exclusively. Each shop also has its own delicatessen, dairy and vegetable sections.
