Gardens & accommodation

The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) has been opening fine gardens to the public for over 75 years. The key attraction of this type of scheme to visitors is that you don’t need to be a devoted gardener to be interested in what they have to offer.

Enjoy NGS gardens

The NGS is all about enjoying gardens in Britain and to have an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon in the process. Some people just visit NGS gardens to enjoy a lovely traditional afternoon tea which are often on offer.

Gardens with overnight facilities

In a latest development a number of National Garden Scheme members have also opened their homes for bed and breakfast visitors. The Cider House (www.cider-house.co.uk/), in Buckland, Devon, is one example of an opportunity to stay in accommodation and enjoy beautiful gardens.

Cider House

The Cider House – Devon

The Cider House is located in the peaceful surroundings of a former Cistercian monastery and has been open to the public as part of the National Garden Scheme for over a decade. It also features a walled garden, sunken herb garden and a West Country wild garden with beautiful camellias and rhododendrons.

South Newington House

South Newington House – Oxfordshire

Another delightful garden with accommodation is South Newington House near Banbury in Oxfordshire. Run by the delightful husband and wife team John and Roberta Ainley. South Newington is a 17th-century hall house built from locally quarried Hornton Stone. It has grounds extending over five acres with a paddock, orchard and varied containing roses, a small walled garden of plants that always attract a large number of butterflies.
