History & heritage

Britain’s history and heritage is both varied and impressive. From pre-history to the recent past, Britain is home to some of the world’s greatest treasures.

You’ll find astounding castles and palaces in every region of the land. Colossal military defences and strongholds dot the landscape, while soaring spires, Gothic carvings and gigantic medieval masterpieces are a familiar sight around the country.

Traditional mill buildings are also plentiful in rural Britain and give a charming insight into the ways and industries of a bygone age. Many still function today and are a delight to see in action.

Britain is the home of the railway and boasts over 200 years of locomotive travel. Our railway lines wind around the length and breadth of the land, rolling over meadows, cutting through mountains and meandering along the coast.

And don’t forget that we are completely surrounded by water. You’ll find lighthouses, ancient ports and historic ships of all shapes and sizes around the complete length of the coast. From mammoth 16th-century warships to historic transatlantic cruise liners, Britain is truly a maritime nation.
