Tale of the Month

Don't miss this month's feature tale of a must do British experience. This month, Margaret Walker tells us of her narrow boat trip around England and Wales.

Canal Boat

England and Wales in a narrow boat

In 2006, we spent a wonderful six days plying the Canal from Ellesmere, England, to Llangollen in Wales. We were given some instructions, but at first, the 55 foot boat was pretty hard to manoeuvre, however, my husband, our daughter and her boyfriend became very skilled at it.

We puttered along at the amazing maximum speed of about 3 mph. If we wanted exercise, it was possible to jump off and easily walk as fast as the boat.

The narrow boat was well equipped too, with good sleeping accommodation for four, plus cooking facilities, but best of all was the view. Fields, fields and yet more green fields. We had the company of lots of ducks, sheep and cows, and an ever present stream of friendly and helpful folk walking along the tow path, so when, occasionally, our boat became wedged across the canal, or some other misadventure occurred, there was always someone on hand to give advice and a 'push'.

It was extremely exciting going across the two very high aqueducts, and through the long, dark tunnels. The locks and bridges were fun to manoeuvre too.

But we all agreed that the absolutely most wonderful aspect of our journey was the peace and quiet. No traffic noise, just the friendly ducks and numerous ducklings to feed; we loved being able to tie up where ever we liked for a meal, and at night to feel absolutely and serenely alone.

It was, for all of us, the most peaceful, amazing and unique holiday that we will ever have.
